About a year ago, I published a YouTube video about the Outgunned RPG, where I provide an overview, go over character creation, and discuss how to play the game online.
As someone who generally prefers to play “theater of the mind style” using a lightweight virtual gaming setup, as opposed to using a VTT with maps and tokens, my recommendation was to use Discord, coupled with the official “Botgunned” dice bot, as well as the Google Sheets based Outgunned character sheet I created. However, I also stumbled over some major bugs in the Botgunned bot, which (IMO) rendered it unusable.
So over the past week or so, I created a new Discord dice bot to play Outgunned, Household, or other RPGs using the Director’s Cut system from Two Little Mice. You can find it here:
https://github.com/digitalhobbit/directors-cut-rpg-discord-bot
The Github page has an invite link to add the bot to your server. The usage should be largely self-explanatory, but there’s some info on the page, and there’s also a built-in /help
command.
The bot shows “Re-roll”, “Free Re-roll”, and “All In” buttons when appropriate. (Of course, it can’t know whether your character possesses a Feat that grants them the ability to do a Free Re-roll in the specific circumstance, so this button always shows up as long as there are non-matched dice in the result.)
After performing a Re-roll, a thumbs-up/down indicates whether the re-roll improved on the original roll or not. If not, one of the previous successes is automatically removed and indicated as LOST in the message. Similar for Free re-roll, except that these don’t have a risk of losing a previous success. And All In rolls that don’t improve on the result lose all previous successes.
In case you run into any issues, or have any suggestions for improvement, please feel free to submit an issue on the Github repository above.
One last note: The Google Sheet has since been updated and now includes a Director Sheet and Mission Sheet in addition to the Character Sheet. So this coupled with the new Discord bot should be everything you need to play Outgunned online.
I hope this is useful. I know I’ll be getting a lot of use out of this myself, as Outgunned remains one of my favorite games.
Note: I also created a separate page on my site to more permanently colleect all these Outgunned RPG Resources, in case you want to bookmark this for future reference.
